Meet Captain Tucker McCombs

For Captain Tucker McCombs, sportfishing has been a lifelong passion and profession. Born in September 1987, Tucker has spent more than two decades on the water, building a reputation as one of California's most accomplished and respected sportfishing captains.

Tucker's journey began as a teenager aboard the Island Tak, where he worked under Captain Steve Kelly from 2001 through 2004. Those early years taught him the fundamentals of the sportfishing industry and laid the foundation for a career defined by hard work, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to his passengers.

After his time on the Island Tak, Tucker joined the legendary Mirage, owned and operated by Captain Joe Villareal. Starting as a deckhand, Tucker worked his way up through the ranks and eventually earned the opportunity to captain the vessel. During his years aboard the Mirage, he developed a deep knowledge of Southern California's fisheries and established himself as one of the industry's rising talents.

In 2016, Tucker purchased his first boat, the Outrider, and began operating as an owner-operator. Fishing out of San Pedro, he ran successful trips targeting offshore tuna, yellowtail, and island species while continuing to build his reputation as a skilled captain and fisherman.

In 2019, Tucker became the owner and operator of the renowned Endeavor. Initially, he divided his seasons between Ventura and San Diego, but as demand for his Ventura operation continued to grow, he eventually committed to fishing Ventura County waters full-time.

Since taking over the Endeavor, Tucker has consistently delivered outstanding results for his passengers. Under his leadership, the Endeavor has become Ventura County's premier White Seabass boat. Year after year, the vessel has produced some of the highest White Seabass counts in the region, earning a reputation as the boat serious anglers seek out when targeting one of California's most prized gamefish.

Building Ventura Sportfishing

Building Ventura Sportfishing

In 2020, Tucker took another major step in his career by purchasing Ventura Sportfishing from longtime owners Greg and Teresa Ewart. The acquisition made Tucker one of the few captains in California who not only owns and operates a successful sportfishing vessel but also owns the landing from which he runs his operation.

Since acquiring Ventura Sportfishing, Tucker has worked tirelessly to strengthen and expand the fleet. Included in the purchase was the popular Island Spirit, a long-standing Ventura favorite that continues to provide quality fishing experiences for anglers of all skill levels.

Tucker also played a key role in bringing the legendary Californian back to Southern California, adding another highly respected vessel to the Ventura Sportfishing lineup. The addition of the Californian further expanded opportunities for anglers seeking everything from local trips to overnight adventures.

The fleet is also home to the Pacific Eagle, operated by one of Ventura County's most experienced owner-operators. With decades of experience fishing local waters, the Pacific Eagle has long been recognized as one of the area's top offshore and tuna boats.

Today, Ventura Sportfishing represents a combination of tradition, experience, and innovation. Under Tucker's leadership, the landing has continued to grow while maintaining its reputation as one of California's premier sportfishing destinations. With a fleet of proven vessels, experienced captains, and access to some of the finest fishing grounds on the West Coast, Ventura Sportfishing offers anglers opportunities ranging from local half-day trips to offshore adventures and world-class White Seabass fishing.

Whether you're a seasoned angler or stepping aboard for your very first trip, Tucker McCombs and the Ventura Sportfishing team are committed to providing an exceptional experience on the water and helping create memories that last a lifetime.
